Palmeiras went top of the early Campeonato Brasileiro standings having edged Atletico Paranaense 1-0.
The Sao Paulo aristocrats struggled to make the breakthrough until the momentum swung in their favour in the 57th minute with the sending off of Parana’s Romulo.
It was no surprise then when Luis Chico, on as a substitute, scored the winner 15 minutes from time. The win took Palmeiras to the top having played three games.
Fluminense made it two wins and a loss as they beat Cruzeiro 2-1 at home.
Rafael Moura’s goal after 45 minutes was cancelled out by Ramon Anselmo but Moura scored the winner in the 71st minute to earn his side the win.
Botafogo enjoyed a 2-1 win of their own, away to Ceara, with goals in each half from Elkeson and Antonio Carlos.
Heber Araujjo and Henrique scored as Figueirense beat Atletico Goianiense 2-0.
