Neto Berola put the home team ahead in the 19th minute and Leonardo Silva doubled their advantage 11 minutes from time.
Substitute Bill pulled a goal back in the 89th minute for Coritiba, but it was not enough to deny Atletico a victory which moved them up to 14th.
Elsewhere, fifth-placed Flamengo and fourth-spotted Figueirense played out a goalless draw which left the latter a point ahead of their rivals with three games left in the battle for a top-four finish.
Finally, Paulo Henrique Ganso’s last-gasp equaliser secured a 1-1 draw for Santos against 10-man Atletico Goianiense.
Jose Leonardo had put the visitors ahead nine minutes before half-time and they looked on course for all three points despite the 62nd-minute dismissal of Agenor, but Ganso’s last-gasp intervention earned the hosts a share of the spoils.
