Bergkamp: PV was Gunners key

The Frenchman, who helped the Gunners win three Premier League

titles in nine years at Highbury between 1996 and 2005, ended his

career at Manchester City in the summer and has taken up a coaching

role there. But former team-mate Bergkamp believes Wenger missed a

trick in not doing everything possible to secure his services and

help install some steel into the mentality of the midfielders. The

Dutchman told the Daily Mail: “There was talk of Patrick going to

Arsenal during the summer. “I would’ve done everything possible to

get him there. Just to get him in and around the dressing room. It

would have brought so much to the team.” Bergkamp, who scored 120

goals for the north Londoners, also believes compatriot Robin van

Persie would benefit from playing alongside an out-and-out striker.

He said: “When I look at Robin van Persie, he is the front player,

but he is better in my old role. They are missing an out-and-out

goalscorer. Now they play with an extra midfielder instead.”
