AZ Alkmaar to face Arsenal with no shirt sponsor

AZ Alkmaar will wear shirts without a sponsor on them when the team faces Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday because DSB Bank NV has been declared bankrupt.

Although AZ has already received this season’s sponsorship payments from the bank, the club hopes exposure on international television could entice a future sponsor to step forward.

The club said in a statement that it decided to remove the logos after consulting with the bank.

DSB Bank founder Dirk Scheringa plans to file a second bankruptcy claim this week for DSB Beheer NV, the holding company that owns AZ.

Because of the bankruptcies, the defending Dutch champions are expected to go on sale in a matter of days.
