Lorient denies Auxerre with late goal
Auxerre missed the chance to move out of the Ligue 1 relegation zone as they conceded an injury-time equaliser to draw 1-1 at home to 10-man Lorient.
Innocent Emeghara levelled for the visitors at the death to cancel out Willy Boly’s 18th-minute opener and keep the hosts in the bottom three.
Lorient had been a man down since midway through the first half when goalkeeper Fabien Audard was sent off for a handling the ball outside his area as Ben Sahar raced through on goal.
But they showed plenty of spirit to come back and make their opponents pay for a succession of missed chances.
Auxerre went ahead from the first attack of the game as Boly met Kamel Chafni’s corner from the left at the near post and headed past Audard.
The keeper’s afternoon went from bad to worse in the 21st minute when he raced out of his area as Sahar ran through.
Audard handled the ball as the Israeli tried to round him and was shown a red card, the visitors sacrificing Maxime Barthelme to bring on replacement keeper Benjamin Lecomte.
Lorient might have levelled before the break only for Emeghara’s control to let him down as he tried to get on the end of a through-ball.
Lecomte kept his side on level terms by denying Chafni two minutes later.
The hosts dominated after the second half as they looked to make the most of the extra man.
Lecomte came off his line to save from Chafni again before saving a Sahar effort with his foot.
The substitute keeper then held Delvin Ndinga’s header and kept out a Prince Segbefia effort, while Bruno Ecuele Manga got in the way of Dennis Oliech’s goalbound shot.
Oliech missed a golden chance to seal the win in the 90th minute when he was sent clear on goal by Chafni only for Lecomte to pull off a fantastic save.
And Emeghara made him pay in stoppage time when he headed home the equaliser at the near post from Mathieu Coutadeur’s corner.
