Gago injury puts Argentina midfielder’s World Cup hopes in doubt

Argentina midfielder Fernando Gago has a knee injury which is expected to rule him out for two months.

Argentina midfielder Fernando Gago is doubtful for the World Cup after suffering a left knee injury at the weekend which is expected to sideline him for two months.

The 28-year-old former Real Madrid man, who has won 47 caps for the Albiceleste, picked up the knock in Boca Juniors’ goalless draw with Santa Fe on Sunday.

A statement on club website read: "The midfielder suffered a grade two sprain in the left knee, with a partial lesion of the medial collateral ligament, and will be immobilised for 15 days.

"The estimated recovery time is 60 days."

Argentina begin preparations for the World Cup on May 20 and play their first World Cup Group F match against Bosnia-Herzegovina on June 15 before further pool games against Iran and Nigeria.
