Anti-Saudi protests mar Piroozi win

Hundreds of Iranian protesters chanting ”death to Saudi”

clashed with police and were forcibly removed during Piroozi’s

Asian Champions League 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad

on Tuesday.

The protests follow weeks of rising tension between

predominantly-Shiite Iran and Gulf states over the Saudi-led

military force sent to Bahrain to prop up the country’s embattled

Sunni monarchy. Saudi football officials had expressed concerns

about security ahead of the match but were persuaded by AFC

officials to play the match.

An eyewitness told The Associated Press two protesters were

seriously injured and one detained after police expelled the

demonstrators in the second half. The semiofficial Fars news agency

said police detained several protesters.
