Russia beats Canada 43-20 for the first time
RICHMOND, Ontario (AP) Russia beat Canada for the first time by a comfortable 43-20 in rugby on Saturday.
No. 8 Anton Rudoi was virtually unstoppable from the back of the scrum in scoring three tries. Before the hour was up, he was sin-binned along with teammate and prop Evgeny Pronenko. But even reduced to 13 men, Russia kept out the Canadians.
Rudoi was set up by fullback Vasily Artemyev for the opening try, and the scrum was the platform for flanker Nikita Vavilin’s try then Rudoi’s second.
Down 19-0, Canada finally replied through No. 8 Luke Campbell.
But Russia flyhalf Iurii Kushnarev set up winger Aleksei Mikhaltsov for tries on each side of halftime to make it 33-10, and converted both.
Rudoi scored attacking from another scrum for his hat trick, and Canada finished with a try for Nick Blevins in a counterattack.
