Fijian hooker suspended for 20 matches for biting a rival

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) Fijian Drua hooker Samu Suguturaga has been suspended for 20 weeks after pleading guilty to biting an opposing player during his team’s National Rugby Championship debut match against Brisbane City.

Captain Andrew Ready was bitten on the ear during in a scrum during Brisbane’s 45-36 win on Saturday.

In a statement Wednesday, the NRC said judicial officer Paul Tully found the conduct was ”in the high end” for the offense.

Unless Suguturaga appeals the ban, he would be unavailable to the Drua for the remainder of the nine-round NRC season.

Ready, who needed two stitches, was quoted after the match as saying: ”I’m lucky he was wearing a mouthguard, otherwise he would have had the whole thing.”
