Troupe, Brown lead Wildcats past Devils

TEMPE, Ariz. – Mathew Troupe tossed five shutout innings in his first collegiate start and Bobby Brown homered and drove in three runs as Arizona downed Arizona State 10-2 in a non-conference contest between the two rivals on Wednesday evening in front of 3,098 fans at Packard Stadium.

Sun Devil fans raised $3,447 for the Cory Hahn Foundation in the second “Pass The Bucket Night.” The State Farm Territorial Cup Series between the two teams is tied at one game apiece with three to play.

Arizona (34-15) jumped out the a three-run lead in the first and broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning that made it 10-0.

A solo home to right field by Abe Ruiz and three consecutive base hits, including an RBI single by Beau Maggi, gave the Sun Devils (32-18) their only two runs of the game in the ninth inning.

Troupe (3-1) gave up just two hits, walked three, struck out six and retired the first 11 batters he faced.

ASU starter Darin Gillies (1-4) hit the first two batters of the game, then misplayed a bunt attempt by Alex Mejia to load the bases. Robert Refsnyder followed with a two-run double down the left field, and Seth Mejias-Brean then drove in Mejia on a fielder’s choice.

Joseph Maggi singled in Riley Moore to make it 4-0 in the third, and Brown hit his fourth home run of the season to lead off the fifth.

The Wildcats broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning, with Brown and Trent Gilbert each contributing a two-run single.

Both teams return to Pac-12 action this weekend, with ASU hosting Washington for three games starting on Friday, and Arizona opening a three-game series at USC.
