Top high school sprinters compete in Chandler

FOX Sports Arizona and the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission have forged a new partnership in order to webcast one of the top high school track events in the country.

The first annual Arizona Sprints Showcase, an event featuring some of the top high school sprinters from across the nation, will take place Friday and Saturday at Chandler High School, with the final rounds to be webcast live on FOXSportsArizona.com.

The showcase was organized by the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission, which has invited the top three boys and girls from each state to crown a national champion in six sprint events: the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 100-meter hurdles, 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles.

Athletes who have already registered for the event include Glendale Deer Valley’s Trae Armstrong, the Arizona state champion in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters, who is ranked in the top 10 nationally in all three events and recently competed in the elite Adidas Dream 100 event; Phoenix Brophy’s Devon Allen, a highly touted football recruit who is ranked 16th in the nation in the 100 meters and in the top five nationally in the 200 meters, 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles; Chandler’s Ky Westbrook, the Arizona girls state champion in the 100 meters who is ranked 14th in the nation; Dallas (Texas) Desoto’s Tremayne Acy, the top 100-meter sprinter in Texas who’s ranked third in the nation in the event and finished second at the UIL Track and Field Championships; and Notre Dame (Calif.) Prep’s Khalfani Muhammad, the California state champion in the 100 and 200 meters who is ranked in the top 20 in the nation in both events.

Saturday’s event finals will be webcast on FOXSportsArizona.com, with the sprints to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The Arizona Sprints Showcase was founded as part of the Phoenix Regional Sports Commission’s High School Sports Division, which was formed last year to develop national championship tournaments in the Valley. The first event in the series, the Arizona Soccer Showcase, was hosted last year by Chandler Hamilton High School and the City of Scottsdale.
