A timeline of events for the helicopter crash that killed former Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and eight others:
Sunday, Jan. 26
The helicopter carrying Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, and seven others crashes into a mountainside northwest of Los Angeles. Bryant coached his daughter’s basketball team and they and others on the helicopter were traveling to a tournament at Bryant’s Mamba Sports Academy.
Monday, Jan. 27
The NBA postpones the Jan. 28 game between the Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center “out of respect for the Lakers organization.”
Wednesday, Jan. 29
Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, posts a statement and a photo of their family on Instagram. She offers thanks to fans and asks for privacy that “we need to navigate this new reality.” She also says a fund, MambaOnThree.org, has been established to support the families of the other victims.
Thursday, Jan. 30
The NBA announces the fourth quarter of the All-Star Game will be untimed and the first team to add 24 points to whatever the leading score was after three quarters will be the winner. The game, played Feb. 16, featured Team Kobe and Team Gianna and all players wore either Bryant’s No. 24 or the No. 2 worn by Gianna.
Friday, Jan. 31
The Lakers played for the first time since the crash, losing at home to the Portland Trail Blazers. The team held an emotional pregame ceremony. “In the words of Kobe Bryant, ‘Mamba out.’ But in the words of us, ‘not forgotten.’ Live on, brother,” LeBron James said as he addressed fans at Staples Center.
Sunday, Feb. 2
A moment of silence in memory of the nine victims was held before the Super Bowl and the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers stood at their respective 24-yard lines.
Monday, Feb. 3
Staples Center removes a massive memorial to Bryant created by the public outside the arena. Some of the items are given to Bryant’s widow and other family members.
Monday, Feb. 24
Staples Center hosts a public memorial. The date 2/24 is an homage to the jerseys worn by Bryant and his daughter.
