Australian skier plunges to death

A skier fell 2,300 feet to his death Wednesday on one of Australia’s highest mountains.

The man, named by the Sydney Morning Herald as 56-year-old Graeme Nelson of Eden, New South Wales, was with two friends, all experienced skiers, on Mt. Feathertop in the state of Victoria when he slipped.

When a companion used ice picks to clamber down to reach him, the man was dead.

Senior Sergeant Dough Incoll, of Bright Police, said the party was skiing down Avalanche Gully, on the south-eastern side of Mt. Feathertop, just below the 6306-foot summit.

Police believe the man hit a patch of ice, causing him to lose control of his skis.

"We think it’s quite obvious he slipped," Incoll said.

The body was winched out by air ambulance.
