Sister runners have medals, magazine cover but still no home

NEW YORK (AP) Three sisters whose track and field prowess brought them medals, TV appearances and even a magazine cover are still struggling for something that's eluded them: a home of their own.

Tai (ty), Rainn (rayn) and Brooke Sheppard and their mother still share a bed in a New York City homeless shelter despite an outpouring of attention this summer when The Associated Press wrote about how they overcame hardships to earn medals in the Junior Olympic Games.

Many were touched by the plight of the girls – ages 11, 10 and 9 – and came forward with offers of help to mother Tonia Handy.

But even as the girls are being honored on the cover of Sports Illustrated Kids, Handy is still looking for a better job and their own home.
