The Tampa Bay Rays re-signed reliever Juan Carlos Oviedo to a one-year deal with $1.5 million guaranteed, the team announced Thursday.
The figure can increase to $2.9 million if performance bonuses are reached.
The Rays signed Oviedo, 31, before last season, but the right-hander formerly known as Leo Nunez never pitched because he was healing from Tommy John surgery. From 2009 to 2011, he earned 92 saves with the Miami Marlins. He has a career 4.34 ERA in seven major league seasons with the Kansas City Royals (2005 to 2008) and Marlins.

Prior to being re-signed, Oviedo was a free agent. On Nov. 4, the Rays declined his $2 million club option and paid a $30,000 buyout.
