The days of “three yards and a cloud of dust” as a viable offensive scheme have passed.
We already knew that based on number of committee situations pervading the NFL landscape. The argument is bolstered by the number of 4,000-yard passers in 2009 (10) and the fact that 18 quarterbacks threw at least 20 touchdown passes. The total of 18 such passers is the highest since 2004, when Peyton Manning and Daunte Culpepper led an aerial assault on NFL defenses.
More quarterbacks survived the 16-game slate than normal, but the highlight reels demonstrate the love of the longball.
