PREGAME PIECES

The Reds magic number to clinch the National League Central is whittled down to six, so even if they sweep the series in Milwaukee and St. Louis loses games the next two nights, Cincinnati will not be spraying the visitors clubhouse with celebratory champaign.  Game two of the three game set finds Dave Bush taking on Edinson Volquez with Brewers Manager Ken Macha inserting Craig Counsell at shortstop and Chris Dickerson in centerfield.

For the Reds, MVP candidate Joey Votto was a late scratch, sitting this one out with a sinus infection.

SHORT STORY

Brewers Shortstop Alcides Escobar might be hitting the rookie wall, or some wall, or running out of gas down the stretch.  Getting a breather tonight, Escobar has logged 137 games played with his batting average falling to .237, going hitless in his last 14 games and just three hits in his last 38 at bats.
