Packers release rookie kicker Giorgio Tavecchio

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The results would indicate that the Green Bay Packers just released their most accurate field-goal kicker. Despite making 86 percent of his attempts in training camp, the Packers parted ways Monday with Giorgio Tavecchio.

This does not guarantee that Mason Crosby will be Green Bay’s kicker this year for a seventh consecutive season, however. Crosby is now competing head-to-head against 23-year-old Zachary Ramirez, who signed with the Packers after a tryout Sunday.

Crosby has only made 80 percent of his field-goal attempts so far in training camp, but he and Ramirez outperformed Tavecchio in Sunday’s practice and that was possibly the deciding factor. Crosby and Ramirez both connected on 10 of 11 kicks, while Tavecchio finished 9 of 11.
