Marlins RHP Ryan Webb, OF Chris Coghlan now free agents
The Marlins announced that they non-tendered right-handed reliever Ryan Webb and outfielder Chris Coghlan by Monday’s 11:59 p.m. ET deadline, making them free agents.
Miami did tender contracts to the other five arbitration-eligible players: slugger Giancarlo Stanton, first baseman Logan Morrison, closer Steve Cishek, lefty reliever Mike Dunn and outfielder Justin Ruggiano.
The 24-year-old right fielder has hit 117 homers and driven in 294 runs in 489 games since his 2010 call-up. From 2011-12, Stanton recorded consecutive seasons of 30-plus long balls and 80-plus RBI.
Morrison, who has recently been the talk of trade rumors, batted .242 with six homers and 36 RBI in 2013.
The 26-year-old missed the first two months of the season recovering from his second knee surgery in less than two years. Morrison hit .282 with four home runs and 11 RBI in 24 first-half games before tailing off.
Cishek (4-6, 2.33 ERA) solidified his closer role after a rough start, finishing the season with a club record 29 consecutive saves. His 94.4 percent save percentage (34 of 36) was tied for the best in the majors.
Dunn (3-4, 2.66 ERA) made the most appearances (75) by any Miami pitcher in 2013. The 28-year-old lowered his ERA to its best since 2010.
Ruggiano, projected in a reserve role, was second to Stanton on the team in homers and plays all three outfield positions. After his surprising 2012 season, the 31-year-old hit just .222 with 18 homers and 50 RBI. He fell four at-bats shy of setting the worst hitless skid in MLB history.
