Marlins’ Jose Fernandez named NL rookie of the month

MIAMI — July 2013 will go down as a pretty impressive month for Miami Marlins rookie right-hander Jose Fernandez.
First, he was named the Marlins’ lone All-Star representative and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the Midsummer Classic. He then shared National League Player of the Week honors (July 22-28) with teammate Steve Cishek.
On Monday, Fernandez was named NL Rookie of the Month.
The 21-year-old Fernandez went 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA in five July starts. He struck out 40 and walked 10 in 35 innings. Opposing hitters batted .174 against the Cuban defector, whose WHIP — the average number of walks & hits allowed — was 0.86.
In his final start of the month, Fernandez gave up two runs, walked none and struck out 13 Pittsburgh Pirates in eight innings while winning on July 28.
For the season, Fernandez is 8-5 with a 2.54 ERA.
