And now there are three.
LSU picked up another major commitment for its women’sbasketball program from post player Shanece McKinney of Mobile, Ala.
The 6-foot-4 McKinney made her decision after visiting Baton Rouge the weekend of the Florida-LSU football game.
Florida and LSU were the two finalists for McKinney, who helped lead LeFlore High School to a Class 5A state title in the spring.
“I really liked the (coaching) staff,” McKinney said. “I feel like they are the ones who can help me develop on the next level.
“And I liked the broadcasting program. Everything you need for that major is there on campus and that’s important to me.”
McKinney’s commitment is LSU’s third from a player rated in ESPN’s Hoop Gurlz 100. She is rated No. 79 on the list that also includes the other two Lady Tigers commitments – 5-8 guard Jeanne Kenney of St. Michael and 6-4 post player Theresa Plaisance of Houma’s Vandebilt Catholic.
Like Kenney and Plaisance, McKinney plans to sign with LSU during the NCAA’s early signing period that runs from Nov. 11-18.
“I’m glad she was able to make a decision and sign in the fall,” LeFlore coach Darrell Walton said. “That will be better for her academically and for us during the season. And it will cut down on my phone bill.”
As a junior, McKinney averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots per game for a LeFlore team that finished 25-2.
“She’s got long arms, can run the floor and has a nice mid-range shot,” Walton said. “On the next level, she’s going to have to develop more offensive moves.
“I have no doubt that will happen once she gets into a college strength and conditioning program.”
McKinney has a 3.4 grade- point average and has met the NCAA’s academic-qualifying standards.
She has followed LSU through the years, watching regional and Final Four games on television.
“I always watched Seimone (Augustus) and Sylvia (Fowles) play for LSU,” McKinney said. “They’re two of my favorite players.”
