Iowa State beats Northern Arizona 78-64

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Jamie Vanderbeken scored a career-high 23 points as Iowa State beat Northern Arizona 78-64 on Friday night, making Fred Hoiberg a winner in his debut as the Cyclones’ coach.
Diante Garrett added 19 points for Iowa State (1-0), which led by as many as 27 points in winning its 13th straight season opener.
Vanderbeken and Garrett, two of just three returning players for the Cyclones, combined for all of Iowa State’s 35 points in the first half as the Cyclones jumped ahead by 15.
Iowa State pushed its lead to as much as 61-34 midway through the second half on a layup by freshman Calvin Godfrey.
Cameron Jones scored 15 points and Shane Johannsen scored 14 for Northern Arizona (0-1). The Lumberjacks, who were one of the nation’s top shooting teams a year ago, shot just 3 of 13 from 3-point range.
