Injuries piling up for Reds

Add two to the Reds’ injured list. Outfielder Chris Heisey and catcher Devin Mesoraco both left Thursday’s 12-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Heisey had a mild left groin strain.

“I felt a little tightness when I scored in the fourth inning,” he said. “They wanted me to take the rest of the day. Hopefully, I’ll be OK. I’ve been dealing with groin thing this year. I felt it little more on that play. They can be tricky. They wanted to be safe, rather than sorry.”

Mesoraco felt something in his side.

“I think it was a cramp from being sick,” he said. “I pounded the fluids, but I was pretty worn out.”

The Reds have played the last eight games without Drew Stubbs, who is dealing with a slightly strained oblique. He hit off a tee Thursday. It was the first time he’s swung the bat since the injury happened on June 5. He also did some agility work.

Stubbs, like Mesoraco, was among the players dealing with the flu-like illness.

“What I did (Thursday), I was supposed to do Tuesday,” he said. “But with being sick and feeling weak, we delayed the schedule.”

The soonest he will take batting practice is Saturday.

Phillips stays hot vs. former team

–RHP Mike Leake went 4 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. He is pitching two days after dealing with a flu-like sickness. He threw 84 pitches.

–3B Scott Rolen will do a brief rehab assignment at Class AAA Louisville. He’ll play Friday and Saturday. If all goes well, he’ll join the team Monday in Cleveland and be activated.

–OF Kristopher Negron recorded his first hit in the majors Thursday. “It’s always good to get the first one,” Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “Major leaguers never forget that one.”

BY THE NUMBERS: 17 — That’s how many hits the Reds had Thursday — a season-high.

QUOTE TO NOTE: That was a gutsy performance by Leake. We tried to stay with him as long as we could. I was trying to get him the win. He came close. I always try to get my pitcher the win. But we had to get the team the win.” — Manager Dusty Baker on Mike Leake’s outing.
