Heat trim roster, keep Michael Beasley, Roger Mason Jr.

Forward Michael Beasley and guard Roger Mason Jr. appear to have earned spots with the Miami Heat, who reduced their roster to the regular-season limit of 15 players on Saturday by waiving forward Eric Griffin and center Justin Hamilton.

Beasley and Mason both arrived at Heat training camp with non-guaranteed contracts.

Each NBA team has until 5 p.m. Monday to set its regular-season roster, but players with non-guaranteed contracts needed to be released by 5 p.m. Saturday to not count against this season’s salary cap.

Beasley, 24, played two seasons with Miami after being drafted by the Heat second overall in 2008. His past three seasons — two with Minnesota, one with Phoenix — included off-court troubles.

A proven scorer, Beasley needed to show the the Heat he was willing to work on his defense and buy into the team’s overall work ethic.

Mason, 33, previously played with six different NBA teams and two others overseas after being drafted by Chicago in 2002. He can play either guard position.

The two-time defending NBA champion Heat open the regular season on Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls at American Airlines Arena.
