Florida catcher Hayes out with shoulder injury
MIAMI (AP) — Florida Marlins catcher Brett Hayes is out indefinitely with a separated left shoulder that he suffered on a collision at home Tuesday night.
Hayes was injured on an inning-ending double play in the top of the 10th when Nationals centerfielder Nyjer Morgan slammed into Hayes attempting to score from second base on a ground ball. Morgan is OK and returned to batting lead-off for Washington on Wednesday at Florida.
While some of the Marlins were agitated by Morgan not sliding, Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez downplayed it.
“In my opinion as a runner on a play like that, when you know it’s going to be a close play at home plate, you make up your mind early and he might have set his mind early. I watched the whole play. He could have slid and he would have been safe, but if you’ve made up your mind up early it’s very hard to change your mind.”
The Marlins called up catcher Chris Hatcher from Double-A Jacksonville.
Florida also called up right-hander Jorge Sosa from Triple-A New Orleans.
Marlins pitcher Ricky Nolasco remains questionable for Friday’s start, according to Rodriguez. Nolasco has been suffering from soreness in his right knee.
