Flanny’s Picks: Week 8
By Jeffrey Flanagan
Last weeks record straight up: 8-6
Season record straight up: 61-43
Last weeks record vs. the spread: 7-7
Season record vs. the spread: 46-52-6
Bills (+7.5) at Chiefs
This probably looks like a layup for the Chiefs, but as the Ravens found out last week (and the Saints as well), you better show up each week in the NFL or you can get burned. The Bills, bad as they are, moved the ball all game against a tough Ravens defense. The big edge here is that the Chiefs should be able to rack up a ton of rushing yards. Time to simply grind one out here.
Chiefs 23, Bills 14
Panthers (+2.5) at Rams
A nice come-from-behind win by the Panthers last week should give them a little confidence. The Rams, meanwhile, are stinging after letting a sure win slip away at Tampa. The Rams will bounce back at home.
Rams 27, Panthers 13
Jags (+6.5) at Cowboys
The Cowboys have everything going against them now after having lost Tony Romo. Emotionally, this team must be spent. But sometimes thats a scary time to play a team. Still, its hard to see the Cowboys regrouping against a Jags team that will likely get David Garrard back at quarterback.
Jags 28, Cowboys 24
Redskins (+2.5) at Lions
The Redskins were extremely fortunate to slip by the Bears, who practically handed the game to them. The Lions are perfectly capable of handing the game to the Redskins as well. But coming off a bye week, and getting Stafford back at quarterback, the Lions may just rise up here and get a win.
Lions 31, Redskins 28
Packers (+5.5) at Jets
The Packers defense is being patched together with glue and tape because of an unheard of number of injuries. The Jets are coming of a bye week and appear healthy. The Packers need this game more than the Jets but injuries have forced them to put together a defense through the waiver wire that wont work against the Jets offense.
Jets 30, Packers 21
Dolphins (+2.5) at Bengals
Miami got robbed last week at home and they might just put a whuppin on the Bengals.
Dolphins 24, Bengals 10
Titans (+3.5) at Chargers
Wow, another must-win for the Chargers. One problem: Vince Young is back at quarterback for the Titans. The Titans will get San Diegos best shot here but the Chargers are a team that just isnt quite right.
Titans 27, Chargers 24
Seahawks (+2.5) at Raiders
Seattle has been surprisingly good so far, good enough to set its sights on winning the division. Even more surprising, though, was the Raiders rout of Denver in Denver last week. Can the Raiders actually put together back-to-back solid games? Flip a coin.
Raiders 23, Seahawks 20
Vikings (+5.5) at Patriots
Will Brett Favre play? Will it matter? The Vikings are in must-win mode but this is a tall order on the road against the Patriots. The Vikings are a lot like the Cowboys right now a mess.
Patriots 20, Vikings 10
Bucs (+3.5) at Cardinals
Tampa Bay just keeps finding ways to win, stealing another one last week from the Rams. And once again, the Bucs find themselves in a winnable game. But their good fortune runs out in the desert.
Cardinals 16, Bucs 10
Broncos at 49ers (pick)
The 49ers have lost their starting quarterback and most likely their season. The Broncos season probably ended last week, too, after the humiliating loss at home to the Raiders. It sure looks like Denver has quit trying for its young coach but if theres an edge in this game, which is in London, it will go to the Broncos and Kyle Orton.
Broncos 24, 49ers 23
Steelers at Saints (pick)
Great match-up here. That stunning loss to the Browns at home last week should be a wake-up call to the Saints. The Saints will play better but Big Ben will pull this one out in a thriller.
Steelers 35, Saints 33
Texans (+5.5) at Colts
The Texans always seem to play the Colts tough and it shouldnt be any different on Monday night. The Colts will survive, barely, with some late Peyton Manning heroics.
Colts 27, Texans 24
