Ethiopia sweeps individual, team races at Bolder Boulder

BOULDER, Colorado (AP) Ethiopia swept the team competition at the 40th annual Bolder Boulder 10-kilometer race on Monday, with Getaneh Tamire winning the men's race and Mamitu Daska defending her women's title.

With three finishers in the top 11, the Ethiopian men won for the ninth time in 21 team competitions at the annual Memorial Day race that concludes at the University of Colorado's football stadium, Folsom Field. Bahrain was second and Kenya took bronze. The Americans were fourth.

The Ethiopian women won for the 12th time overall and for the ninth time in the last decade. With a 1-3-4 finish, the eight team points tied for the third-lowest winning score in race history. The U.S. team placed second and Japan captured third.

Tamire's time of 28 minutes, 18 seconds was the fourth-fastest in race history and beat Tanzania's Gabriel Geay by 21 seconds. Geay, last year's winner, was racing for a team of runners from different countries dubbed ''Pan African.''

Daska won her second straight Bolder Boulder. Her sixth overall victory broke a tie with Rosa Mota for most wins in race history regardless of gender.

Daska's time was 32:36 and her win was the seventh straight by an Ethiopian woman at the Bolder Boulder.

Nearly 52,000 people signed up for the citizen's race, part of what's billed as the nation's largest Memorial Day celebration.
