Dion Jordan back at Dolphins practice; game status unclear

DAVIE, Fla. — Miami Dolphins first-round draft pick Dion Jordan returned to practice in full pads Tuesday after having been limited since the second preseason game due to a shoulder injury.

“He looked good. I gotta watch the tape a little bit closer but he moved well, and worked on some of the the basic fundamentals and techniques. We’ll see how it looks on tape,” coach Joe Philbin said following practice.

Philbin did not say how much Jordan would play, if at all, against the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night in the final preseason game.

“We haven’t finalized any of our playing time yet,” Philbin said. “We’ll see. I wouldn’t rule anything out.”

Late last week, Jordan said “it wouldn’t be a surprise” if he missed the regular-season opener at Cleveland.

Jordan, an edge rusher from Oregon and the third overall pick in April’s draft, has been hampered by a right shoulder injury. He underwent offseason surgery for a torn labrum.

“We would never want to put any player out there on the practice field if we didn’t feel confident he was healthy and able to perform his job well,” Philbin said.

The rookie did not take part in full-contact drills last week and last played against Jacksonville on Aug. 9 in Miami’s second preseason game.

“Would I be surprised? It’s my body, so I know when I’m ready to go or I’m not ready to go. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all,” Jordan said Thursday after being asked if he could miss the regular-season opener. “I’m saying either way, it’s my body, so I would know when I’m ready to go or when I’m not ready to go.

“For me the most important thing is to get healthy. It’s not a surprise to me at all. I want to get healthy. So I’m going to do what I have to do to make sure I’m there.”

While Jordan returned on Tuesday, rookie cornerback Will Davis missed his second straight day of practice with an apparent leg injury. The third-round pick from Utah State seemed to suffer a foot injury late in Saturday night’s loss to Tampa Bay.
