Club behind NYC marathon grows into powerhouse
NEW YORK (AP) Next Sunday’s New York City Marathon will be the first in 11 years not led by Mary Wittenberg.
She’s the executive who presided over a period of tremendous growth at New York Road Runners, the club that has organized the marathon since 1970.
During her tenure, Road Runners grew into a $73 million-a-year operation.
The number of people participating in the club’s weekly races around New York City have more than doubled.
Road Runners events have had more than 290,000 finishers in the past 12 months.
Wittenberg stepped down in May to become CEO of Virgin Sport, a new venture of the British billionaire Richard Branson.
