Look out for: 

The Braves are 3-4 with three games remaining at San Diego on the longest road trip of the season (they had a nine-game road trip to Colorado, Chicago at St. Louis in May). … They won three of four games against the Padres at Turner Field on Aug. 13-16. … The Braves will have their first off day on Thursday after a stretch of 20 games in 20 days. They are 9-8 since their last day off. … With Ben Sheets on the DL with a sore shoulder, the Braves returned to a five-man rotation sooner than expected, featuring Tim Hudson, Paul Maholm, Kris Medlen, Tommy Hanson and Mike Minor. Manager Fredi Gonzalez had planned on staying with the six-man rotation through Wednesday.

Who’s hot:

Medlen is 4-0 with a 0.83 ERA with 29 strikeouts and five walks in 32 2/3 innings in his five starts. The Braves have won a club-record 16 consecutive games that he’s started and he’s 9-0 in his past 19 starts, dating to 2010. Medlen, who is scheduled to start Tuesday, is 3-0 with a 0.65 ERA this month. … Jason Heyward is hitting .325 (13-for-40) with four home runs, a triple and nine RBIs in his past 10 games. He stole his 19th base on Sunday night and is just one away from becoming the first Brave since Andruw Jones in 2000 to have 20 home runs and 20 steals in a season. He also hit his 24th home run in Sunday’s 7-1 victory. … Michael Bourn has six steals in his past 10 games. … Minor, who leads the Braves with 143 1/3 innings, has a 2.87 ERA in his past 10 starts, but is only 4-4 in that span. He has struck out 44 batters and walked 13 in past 62 2/3 innings. … Luis Avilan has a 1.69 ERA and eight strikeouts in his past 10 2/3 innings.

Who’s not:

Hanson has a 6.82 ERA and opponents have hit .323 against him in his past six starts. That stretch includes two games in which gave up only one run, but he’s lasted past the fifth inning in only one of those starts. … Dan Uggla appeared to be coming out of his lengthy slump earlier this month, but he’s hitting .195 in August. He has three home runs and 13 RBIs, which surpassed his production of July (one HR, six RBIs), but was on the bench Sunday night and has three hits in his past 32 at-bats with no RBIs in that span. … Chipper Jones, who is battling an oblique problem and has missed two consecutive games, has three hits in his past 17 at-bats (.176) and his season’s average has dropped to .305 after reaching .320 on Aug. 7. … Cristhian Martinez has a 4.40 ERA in his past 14 1/3 innings, giving up 16 hits and seven runs in that stretch.


Atlanta: P Brandon Beachy (Tommy John surgery) will be out until next summer; SS Andrelton Simmons (finger), SS Jack Wilson (finger), OF Matt Diaz (thumb), P Ben Sheets (shoulder) P Jair Jurrjens (groin) are on the 15-day DL.

San Diego: P Jason Marquis (hand), P Huston Street (calf), P Andrew Cashner (back), C Nick Hundley (knee) are on the 15-day DL. P Dale Thayer is on paternity leave.

Philadelphia: C Carlos Ruiz (toe), OF Nate Schierholtz (foot) and Brian Schneider (hamstring) are on the 15-day DL.

On the farm:

John Cornely, the Braves’ 15th-round pick out of Wofford in 2011, was promoted from Rome to Lynchburg last week. He has already struck out five batters in two innings for new club after holding batters to a .161 average and a 1.69 ERA in his final 16 innings at Rome. He had seven saves at Rome. … Mississippi’s J.R. Graham, the fourth-round pick in 2011, allowed one hit in six innings on Tuesday and three hits in six innings on Sunday. He’s 3-1 with Mississippi after going 9-1 at Lynchburg, and his combined ERA is 2.71. … The Gwinnett Braves were involved in four shutouts this week. They lost to Norfolk 8-0 on Tuesday, defeated Syracuse 6-0 on Friday before losing 1-0 and 7-0 on Saturday and Sunday. … A.J. Holland, the 16th-round pick in 2011, is 3-1 in his past six starts at Rome. He’s given up seven runs in his past 33 innings for a 1.91 ERA.
