After sweeping a two-game midweek series with San Diego and dropping two of three to Washington State in Pullman, the Arizona State Sun Devils return home to host the USC Trojans in a three-game Pac-10 series. The series will get underway Friday night from Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
One of the best rivalries in the history of college baseball, the Sun Devils and Trojans have met 187 times, with USC holding a 94-93 edge in the all-time series. Arizona State took two of three from the Trojans last season in Los Angeles.
The high-octane Sun Devils lost their first series of the year at Washington State last weekend, losing two of three, but still remain among the top three ranked teams in all the major college polls.
Reigning Pac-10 Player of the Week Zack MacPhee leads the potent Sun Devil offense with his .445 average, six home runs and 43 RBIs. ASU will turn to Seth Blair (5-0, 3.09 ERA) on Friday to face the Trojans, whose .287 team average ranks sixth in the Pac-10.
USC was swept out of Berkeley by California last weekend to fall to 15-17 and 2-7 in the Pac-10 this year. The Trojans feature four regulars that are currently hitting over .300: Ricky Oropesa (.328), Matt Foat (.322), Cade Kreuter (.316) and Alex Sherrod (.309). Of USC’s top four starters, none sport an ERA less than 3.50.
