LAS CRUCES- Golf has expanded greatly over the past decade and New Mexico State is one such place that is open to all, as long as they make the cut.
NM State women’s golf is far reaching in its search for talent including France, Australia and Hawai’i. NMSU women golfers are far reaching in their accomplishments as well. Several former players have gone on to have successful golf careers in the Ladies Professional Golf Association and other various tours.
Head coach Paul Brilliant is one reason for this success. With a coaching career of over twenty years, a few stints with PGA players and tour experience himself; Brilliant has coached such players as LPGA pro Alena Sharp, former pro A.J. Eathorne and Lehua Wise, who is currently playing on the DURAMED Futures Tour.
“I still follow and talk to a lot of the women,” Brilliant said. “Of course I’m still concerned with how they’re doing.”
Sharp, who turned pro in 2003, stays in contact with Brilliant. She is currently ranked 112 on the Rolex Tour
In 2007 Sharp was voted Female Professional of the Year by the Golf Journalists Association of Canada . Sharp’s awards include: 2008 – SCORE GOLF Top Female, Tour Professional of the Year and the 2008 Captain of Canadian team at Women’s World Cup.
