ACC basketball capsules: weekend outlook

Saturday, Feb. 11

Virginia (19-4, 6-3) at North Carolina (20-4, 7-2)
When:  1 p.m.
Where: Chapel Hill, N.C., Dean Smith Center (21,750)
Fast break: How will the Tar Heels bounce back after Wednesday’s shocking loss at home to Duke? This is a really tough task because UNC wants to churn its wheels to best feel good about itself, and UVa has a way of making teams feel like they’re playing in quick sand at times.. Carolina must be fully dialed into this game to win, because you know the Cavaliers will be.
Forecast: UNC, 75-69.

Miami (15-7, 6-3) at Florida State (16-7, 7-2)
When:  1 p.m.
Where: Tallahassee, FL, Tucker Center (12,400)
Fast break: This should be an excellent game. Miami is playing exceptionally well and FSU should be enraged after its lousy loss at BC the other night. Both clubs have won at Duke, so they can certainly get to a high level. The keys here are Reggie Johnson staying out of foul trouble for the Hurricanes and Michael Snaer getting looks from various spots on the floor for the Seminoles.
Forecast: FSU, 70-65.

Maryland (14-9, 4-5) at Duke (20-4, 7-2)
When:  4 p.m.
Where: Durham, N.C., Cameron Indoor Stadium (9,314)
Fast break: Duke has not played well at home of late, and the challenge coming off that shocking last-second win at UNC is considerable. The Blue Devils can’t let their guard down, they need to keep playing with the passion and focus that allowed them to win at UNC, which would make this a building process. The Terrapins desperately need a marquee win if they are going to near the NCAA discussion, and they have the physical makeup of a team that can give an unfocused Duke team fits.
Forecast: Duke, 73-62.

Clemson (11-12, 3-6) at Wake Forest (11-13, 2-8)
When:  4 p.m.
Where: Winston-Salem, N.C., Joel Coliseum (14,565)
Fast break: Big game for both teams as getting to .500 is always important to coaches. But it is a bigger game for Wake, as the Demon Deacons are coming off another blowout loss, and at some points if the losing continues, especially the manner most losses have come, Jeff Bzdelik’s job security has to become an issue.
Forecast: Wake, 68-64.

Sunday, Feb. 12

Boston College (8-16, 3-7) at Virginia Tech (13-11, 2-7)
When:  6 p.m.
Where: Blacksburg, VA, Cassell Coliseum (9,847)
Fast break: If the Hokies can’t win this game the heat under Seth Greenberg’s seat will be more than simmering. Tech shouldn’t have any trouble with the Eagles, especially if they clamp down defensively like many of Greenberg’s past teams routinely did. BC, though, has a game plan and sticks to it, and because of that it can escape with a win.
Forecast: Virginia Tech, 67-59.

Andrew Jones’ record: 170-43
