ACC basketball capsules: Wednesday outlook
Wednesday, Feb. 8
Florida State (16-6, 7-1) at Boston College (7-16, 2-7)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Chestnut Hill, MA, Conte Forum (8,600)
Fast break: FSU simply needs to play with enough focus that it doesn’t resort back to the team that lost at home to Princeton on a night the Seminoles scored just 10 points in the first half.
Forecast: FSU, 75-60.
Wake Forest (11-12, 2-7) at Virginia (18-4, 5-3)
When: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Charlottesville, VA, John Paul Jones Arena (16,500)
Fast break: Virginia should come out with the intent of clobbering the Demon Deacons. UVa is coming off a tough, close loss at FSU and hasn’t waxed anyone for a while. The Wahoos really need to feel that vibe.
Forecast: UVa, 73-57.
Duke (19-4, 6-2) at North Carolina (20-3, 7-1)
When: 9 p.m.
Where: Chapel Hill, N.C., Dean Smith Center (21,750)
Fast break: The Blue Devils have not played well at home of late, but they have done a nice job on the road, using the energy directed at them by opposing fans to fuel that solid play. The difference in this game is that winning at UNC isn’t exactly the same challenge as winning at Virginia Tech or Maryland, which are the team’s best wins and performances over the last month. Duke must hit perimeter shots, which means Andre Dawkins knocking them down early and Seth Curry drilling them late. The Devils also must hound the you-know-what out of UNC point guard Kendall Marshall to wear him down because the Tar Heels basically have no backup. The Heels need to pound it inside using Tyler Zeller and John Henson to dominate the interior and opportunistically score from the perimeter. UNC should own the glass, and if it does and gets into a fast-break fest it could win by a very large margin.
Forecast: UNC, 94-80.
Andrew Jones’ record: 168-43
