ACC basketball capsules
Monday, Jan. 2
Rhode Island (2-12) at Boston College (5-8)
When: 1 p.m.
Where: Chestnut Hill, MA, Conte Forum (8,600)
Fast break: Both teams have really struggled and are playing mostly new players. URI’s issues have been more surprising, but they have won a couple of games recently and are dangerous enough to push BC. The Eagles need to win this for many reasons, self confidence in the most important one.
Forecast: BC, 72-70.
Virginia (12-1) at LSU (10-3)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Baton Rouge, LA, Maravich Center (13,472)
Fast break: LSU has won seven straight games and overall has wins over Western Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Houston, Rutgers, and Marquette. Six Tigers average scoring 8 or more points a game, but they are shooting just 40.5 percent from the floor and have more turnovers than assists. That should play into UVa’s backline defense, but the Wahoos also must respond to a faster-paced game than they’ve been playing.
Forecast: UVa, 70-67.
Wofford (7-6) at Wake Forest (9-4)
When: 7 p.m.
Where: Winston-Salem, NC, Joel Coliseum (14,665)
Fast break: Wofford is capable of sticking with the Demon Deacons. It has beaten Tulane and Bradley so far. But Wake has more talent and should make the big plays down the stretch to win this one.
Forecast: Wake, 74-66.
UNC-Greensboro (2-12) at Miami (8-4)
When: 9 p.m.
Where: Coral Gables, FL, BankUnited Center (7,000)
Fast break: Wes Miller’s team basically is starting from scratch now and has no chance of pulling off the shocker. Reggie Johnson’s return to Miami’s lineup makes the Hurricanes formidable for any foe.
Forecast: Miami, 78-55.
Andrew Jones’ record: 124-24
