Winter Deaflympics in Slovakia canceled

The International Committee of Deaf Sports says the 17th Winter

Deaflympics in Slovakia has been canceled because of a

”comprehensive failure” of local organizers to deliver what they

promised.

ICDS chief executive Tiffany Granfors said in a statement Sunday

”we are heartbroken … and we are working as hard as we can to

mitigate the effect it will have on deaf athletes and deaf

sport.”

On Friday, the committee announced the cancellation of the games

scheduled for Feb. 18-26 in the High Tatras mountain range.

The organizers said they were not able to secure necessary

funding. Chief organizer Jaromir Ruda said they were ready to pay

for the lost expenses to teams.

U.S. team director Jeff Lewis said teams from three countries

had already arrived in Slovakia.
