Randall Cunningham’s daughter qualifies for U.S. Olympic track and field team

Vashti Cunningham, the daughter of former NFL star quarterback Randall Cunningham, qualified for the Rio Olympics on Sunday, finishing second to Chaunte Lowe in the women’s high jump at the U.S. Track and Field trials. Lowe cleared 2.01 meters, enough to edge Cunningham’s jump of 1.97.

Cunningham, 18, became the youngest U.S. track and field athlete to make the Olympic team since 1976 and if she were to win a medal at the Games, she would be the youngest since 1972 to do so. She won a gold medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in March and signed a sponsorship contract with Nike days after the victory.

Cunningham and Lowe are attempting to end the U.S.’s Olympic gold-medal drought in the high jump. Louise Ritter is the last American woman to win gold in the event, claiming her crown during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
