English soccer likely delayed for 2012 Olympics

London 2012 organizers say the start of the 2012-13 English

soccer season could be delayed to avoid a clash with the

Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee requires of host countries

that no major sporting events are held at the same time as the

games.

The English soccer season traditionally begins in early August

in divisions below the Premier League. The start of the Premier

League follows a week later. The 2012 Olympics run from July 27 to

Aug. 12.

Paul Deighton, the London 2012 chief executive, confirmed on

Thursday that he believed the Premier League schedule would be

pushed back.
