GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Those contending for the final start in the Indians’ rotation will see action during the first two games of spring training.
Zach McAllister gets the start in Tuesday’s Cactus League opener against the Reds. McAllister is virtually guaranteed a spot on the staff since he is out of minor-league options. The right-hander was 4-7 with a 5.23 ERA last season but was effective coming out of the bullpen in September.
Josh Tomlin (6-9, 4.76 ERA) will start Wednesday against Cincinnati and will be followed by T.J. House. (5-3, 3.35 ERA). Early spring training projections have House and Danny Salazar with the slight edge in the competition.
Tuesday’s other pitchers are expected to be Charles Brewer, Michael Roth, Bryan Price, Nick Hagadone and Dustin Molleken. On Wednesday, CC Lee, Nick Maronde, Will Roberts and Jeff Manship are also likely to take the hill.
Both games are on SportsTime Ohio beginning at 3 p.m.
GOING LIVE: Saturday will mark the first day of live batting practice as the Indians’ hitters get to go up against the pitchers. Terry Francona though terms it more as pitchers practice.
"Some guys will swing but others will want to track the pitches The worse thing they can do is get bad habits," Francona said. "As a hitter when you are facing a pitcher on Field 4 if they throw you that same pitch in a game you might hit it a mile but not on Field 4."
