Masterson goes five innings in rehab start

Justin Masterson pitched five innings in a rehab start for the Columbus Clippers on Sunday night. The Tribe right-hander has been on the disabled list since July 8th with a sore right knee.

Masterson threw 71 pitches in the start. He allowed a pair of runs while striking out six, but was not without command issues. He walked two batters in the second inning on eight straight pitches. He also threw a wild pitch allowing a baserunner to get into scoring position.

He allowed five hits and two earned runs.

In Masterson’s three starts prior to going on the disabled list, he pitched a total of nine innings and gave up thirteen earned runs while walking ten. The two inning start against the Yankees on July 7th was the second two inning outiing of the season. Eight of Masterson’s nineteen starts have lasted fewer than five innings.

The Indians could activate Masterson as early as Thursday. He could be in line for a start on Friday.
