We won’t have to wait all that much longer to know which quarterback will begin the season as the Cleveland Browns starter.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine was predictably asked about one of the NFL’s biggest storylines heading into training camp, the team’s quarterback competition between incumbent Brian Hoyer and rookie Johnny Manziel.

Pettine said the team will make a decision on who will be under center Week One in Pittsburgh no later than the third preseason game, and maybe even sooner.

"It’ll be before the third preseason game. I just don’t have a date. I don’t know if I’ll set a date and kind of paint ourselves into a date, but it will be sooner than the third preseason game," Pettine said.

The Browns will play that third preseason game in Cleveland against the St. Louis Rams on Aug. 23.

Pettine did not yet say who would start the first two preseason games — at Detroit and Washington – at quarterback.

Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains will join Pettine in a meeting to create a plan for divvying time between Hoyer and Manziel during training camp.

Hoyer, who went 3-0 as Browns starter last year before suffering a season-ending injury, is the leader in the clubhouse for the job, articulated by Pettine following the team’s minicamp.

Browns training camp starts Saturday morning in Berea.
