Here is what Cavaliers coach Mike Brown told reporters in Boston about the suspension of Andrew Bynum prior to Saturday’s game:
Question: What can you tell us about Andrew?
Brown: That’s an internal matter. I know you can respect that so there’s really nothing to tell.
Q: Do you still believe he can be the player you thought he could be?
Brown: Good player. I think everybody saw glimpses of it.
Q: There are reports he doesn’t like basketball and doesn’t want to play anymore. Do you get that impression?
Brown: I don’t know. I have never heard that before. That’s something you’d have to catch up with him and ask.
Q: When do you expect him back?
Brown: It’s indefinite. I’m not trying to be funny, but everyone knows what indefinite means.
Q: Has he played his last game (with the Cavs)?
Brown: He’s had an indefinite suspension. Again, I’m not trying to be funny, but you know what indefinite means.
Question: How does this impact the team moving forward?
Brown: We’ve got 14 guys in that locker room that are very focused and determined and ready to take on any challenge that’s in front of them. They’re great guys. They’re focused guys, and they know how to play the game the right way. That’s what I’m focused on, just helping those guys win ball games.
Question: (Celtics coach) Brad Stevens said he’d seen you guys play better without Bynum. What do you think of that?
Brown: I like the guys in the locker room. The guys in the locker room have played hard. We’ve won games with the guys in the locker room. That’s Brad’s opinion. I like the team that’s in the locker room. I like the guys in the locker room. I still think we can win.
Question: Does this change the identity, or help you form an identity?
Brown: No. We’re just focused on who we are. We want to get better. Our identity’s going to still be the same. We want to be a defensive-minded team. We went away from that a little bit as of late. But that’s what we want to be.
Question: How disappointed are you that this had to happen?
Brown: I’m worried about the guys in the locker room. As simple as that. In our business there are a lot of ups and a lot of downs throughout the season. I think you all understand that. So what you do as a head coach is you keep moving forward. Any time you look back on anything or dwell on anything is wasted energy from the guys in the locker room, which is obviously very important.
Question: What has to happen for Andrew to be reinstated?
Brown: Again, I’m not trying to be funny, but he’s suspended indefinitely and we all know what that means. We’ll see.
