WATCH: Gophers rout UMD 7-4 in home opener

Video Details

The Minnesota Gophers routed the defending champs Sunday, beating UMD 7-4.

ANNOUNCER 1: --and not too much action.

ANNOUNCER 2: Brock goes to the slot for Garrett Wait-- another Edina freshman-- one of five of them. Coming into the net, a whack at it, and a goal! It's Brannon McManus, who won a National Bantam Title at Shattuck. And the Californian, Brannon McManus, lights the lamp for Minnesota. It's 1-0 Minnesota.

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: This is exactly where Brannon McManus needs to go to be successful-- the center of the ice. Reedy with a nice dump pass there to get that puck over to McManus. You put him in traffic, he can score. When he plays a peripheral game, it is more difficult. A wonderful sign for Gopher fans when McManus is able to get to the interior. And the sophomore notches his first of the year.

ANNOUNCER 2: That was a great idea. It has been a great start to this game. Ready to go. Score! Scott Reedy calling f the puck with McManus in front of the net to deliver. And the Gophers have struck again. It's 2-0 Minnesota.

[CHEERING]

[BAND PLAYING]

ANNOUNCER 2: So two goals quickly by Brannon McManus--

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 2: --the sophomore from Newport Beach, California.

ANNOUNCER 1: The Gophers do a nice job stretching the offensive zone laterally, and that allows Clayton Phillips to rip one at the net-- not sure if McManus got a stick on that or if that hit the defender in front of Hunter Shepard. I believe it would have been Perunovich. Nonetheless, the Gophers up early in this one over their in-state rival.

ANNOUNCER 2: Sheehy now driving. Over two minutes left in the five-minute Minnesota power play. The long center-- they kick it high. Phillips is there, bangs it low. Score! A power-play goal by Tyler Sheehy, as the Gopher captain lights the lamp.

[BAND PLAYING]

ANNOUNCER 2: It's 3-0.

[CHEERING]

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: Great signs of a very good season for this Gopher team. First off, well, Tyler Sheehy is on the board. He is moving well. And, oh my gosh, a power play that struggled a year ago, it looks like it has a new quarterback. Clayton Phillips with a pair of points so far and an amazing display of patience there. A lot of players would have shot that puck. Clayton Phillips wisely passed towards the side of the net. Then-- Ranta gets an opportunity to get off the ice. Sheehy motions he's going to stay. Romanko hops on.

ANNOUNCER 2: Noah Cates runs, and guns, and scores. It's a power-play goal for the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs as Noah Cates, the freshman from Stillwater lights it up. And the Bulldogs are on the board with a power play-- 3 to 1.

[CHEERING]

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: Perunovich spreads this out, and Noah Cates just really uses his speed, tries to back the defender in, Nanne, who then cuts him in half. But Noah Cates has the wherewithal to use Nanne as a screen there and dusts one by Robson, who's likely deeper than he would have preferred. The 6' 3" netminder comes out even another foot and makes the shooting area that much smaller. Noah Cates, congratulations on your first goal of your collegiate career. A draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers. Like--

ANNOUNCER 2: Dangerous moment-- Swaney wheels. UMD still attacking. Drive, score off the crossbar, and it's a one-goal game.

[CHEERING]

ANNOUNCER 2: How do you like that? With each team a man short, UMD chipping away at a 3-0 Minnesota lead, as now Mikey Anderson, a sophomore from Roseville, has made it 3 to 2.

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: And just nice puck movement here as Roehl moves this. And Mikey Anderson-- whose brother Joey left for the New Jersey Devil organization-- hammers this home. He had five goals in his freshman campaign-- huge contributor to scant-- Scott Sandelin's blue line and a future NHLer.

ANNOUNCER 2: Walker got it back anyway. They pump it over. Here's Phillips. Score! And the Gophers got it in for Walker, and the light is lit.

[CHEERING]

[BAND PLAYING]

ANNOUNCER 2: Quick as you like, 3 to 2 becomes 4 to 3 Minnesota. Sammy Walker!

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: Sammy Walker starts this play off by using his speed through the neutral zone. A wonderful 2-on-1 play there by Rem Pitlick, and he will get the puck. They'll spread this out, and Clayton Phillips is going to collect his third assist of the game as Walker touches that down. And you see Shephard look towards the sky. And--

ANNOUNCER 2: Very dangerous-- rolling down the pad of Mat Robson. And, now, easing away and [INAUDIBLE] ahead. And it's Pitlick in a footrace with Anderson. Score!

[CHEERING]

ANNOUNCER 2: That was beautiful.

[BAND PLAYING]

ANNOUNCER 2: Rem Pitlick, oh, oh, oh, man.

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: Rem Pitlick, last year's leading point getter for this team. Well, he is buzzing just like Sammy Walker. And watch the abuse he's going to take as he has Matty Anderson all over him as he was trying to protect that puck. And for the kids at home watching his left-- excuse me, right knee protect the puck as--

ANNOUNCER 2: Blocked by Shephard.

ANNOUNCER 1: McManus just picking Wolff's pocket.

ANNOUNCER 2: Shephard again, a chip shot, yes! It's in! It's Garrett Wait.

[CHEERING]

ANNOUNCER 2: Garrett Wait, the freshman from Edina, has lit it up.

[BAND PLAYING]

ANNOUNCER 2: And the Edina Hornets are striking often here tonight, I'll tell you-- the Golden Gophers 6 and UMD 2.

ANNOUNCER 1: Well, Bob Motzko--

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: --wanted to increase puck hunger. And watch McManus here pick Wolff's pocket, finding that puck, brings it to the net, waits. First opportunity, well, that was blocked by Mikey Anderson, but the freshman would cycle back through the high slot. Romanko tries to go--

ANNOUNCER 2: Look at that.

ANNOUNCER 1: --far side--

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: --and what hands there as he gets it from his back hand. --right up to the limits on getting this job.

ANNOUNCER 2: Now, in comes Perunovich wheeling behind the net, point blank flipper of a shot, second one. It is in! It's a goal. UMD scores, and the Gopher goalie, Robson, is not happy with that. He comes up barking away at the referee, who was standing right there in a position and gave the signal immediately for a goal. As a disgusted Robson watches Jackson Cates--

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 2: --celebrate that goal-- so both the Cates brothers have scored here tonight for UMD.

ANNOUNCER 1: Once again, Perunovich involved in the offense. He gets people to bite on the near side, and then Robson tries to collect that puck between his legs as he was down on his back. And I believe his argument is-- I believe he's going to lose that argument that he had the puck under control. As you saw, Jackson Cates got his stick in there.

ANNOUNCER 2: And that one slowly in. A moment of danger there. There was a question about what-- whether there'd be a whistle there. Reedy drives the line for Minnesota, quickly three on two. Shot, score! And it's Sampo Ranta, the freshman from Finland. And he gets his first Golden Gopher goal, and it has been a night for it. Congratulations, Sampo Ranta, who nailed his first collegiate point last night in Duluth--

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 2: --only the second Finnish player in Gopher history.

ANNOUNCER 1: Watch the hockey IQ here by Ranta, because he's about to change. He's going to look up and identify. See him right there. He says, oh, no, this is a three-on-two. I got to stay on the ice. Reedy distributes the puck, and then he beats Shephard after almost going for a change. You know he--

ANNOUNCER 2: [INAUDIBLE] the pride of the Warriors, pops it up to Hilderman. And a drive by Richards-- turned away, rebound, score! A power-play goal by Jackson Cates-- his second goal tonight. And UMD-- it trims the margin to now 3 goals.

[CHEERING]

[WHOOSH]

ANNOUNCER 1: Take a look here at the puck movement of the Bulldogs on the outside. And then it's some nice puck hunger here as you see Mikey Anderson get a hold of that puck in front of the net. And, again, Jackson Cates, the older of the Cates brothers, gets his second of the game.
