Twins' May has torn UCL, likely out for season

The Minnesota Twins announced Saturday that starting pitcher Trevor May suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow while pitching against Team USA on Wednesday.

May will get a second opinion Sunday, but failing a different diagnosis he is looking at having Tommy John surgery. The procedure would be expected to sideline May for 12-14 months.

Last season, May had back issues which forced an early end to his season. He made 44 relief appearances in 2016 with a 5.27 ERA, 1.313 WHIP and 12.7 K/9. May had been battling for a spot in Minnesota's rotation this spring and had made two starts in the exhibition season, allowing one run in four innings on two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

"It’s a big blow, especially with how last year went and trying to get back to where it was,” May told reporters in Fort Myers, Fla. "I was excited. Unfortunately I’m not going to be able to do that this year."

May said the injury occurred on a 0-2 pitch to Team USA's Andrew McCutchen. The pitcher said this is the first time in his 10 years of pitching professionally that he's had any arm issue.

May, 27, came to the Twins in a deal with Philadelphia for outfielder Ben Revere in December 2012. He had pitched in 102 games with 25 starts for the Twins in three seasons.
