Rubio dishes out adorable assist to young Jazz fan
As a stadium crew wiped blood off the court at Utah’s EnergySolutions Arena during a third-quarter stoppage in Salt Lake City on Tuesday night — the second time a Timberwolves shooting guard had been gored on the floor in Minnesota’s 112-97 win — Ricky Rubio realized he needed someone to pass to.
And with wounded backcourt-mates Alexey Shved and Kevin Martin out of the game, he settled on someone that wasn’t wearing a Wolves uniform.
After Bear, the Jazz mascot, had led a small girl onto the court and handed her a basketball that didn’t quite topple her over, Rubio dished out an adorable assist that may not have shown up in the box score (he had 13 of those) but surely made a young basketball fan’s night.
Rubio and the girl threw a few bounce passes back and forth before the game restarted with 3:01 left in the third quarter. The Spanish playmaker put a little friendly spin on his tosses, both of which she caught, while the girl’s last pass was too hot for Rubio to handle. The impromptu exchange lasted just a few seconds, but the memory for the girl will last a lifetime and may have won the Wolves a new fan.
Just before play resumed, she was whisked away by Bear wearing a megawatt smile that couldn’t be dimmed even by the Jazz’s second straight loss to the Wolves by 15 points or more.
As one of the announcers in the video quipped, to the Jazz, the Western Conference’s worst team, she just might be worth a 10-day contract.
