Johan Santana elected to Twins Hall of Fame

Johan Santana, a left-handed pitcher who won two Cy Young awards in Minnesota, was elected to the Twins Hall of Fame on Friday afternoon, becoming the 31st member of the exclusive club.

The ceremony to celebrate Santana's career will take place Aug. 4 at Target Field before the Twins take on the Kansas City Royals.

“The Minnesota Twins are thrilled with the election of Johan Santana to the Twins Hall of Fame,” Twins president and CEO Dave St. Peter said in a press release. “Johan’s brilliant career – defined by two Cy Young Awards, his devastating change-up and incredible athleticism – make him one of the greatest pitchers of his generation. He’s richly deserving of this special honor.”

Selected by Minnesota in the 1999 Rule 5 draft, Santana played with the Twins from 2000-07. He tallied a 93-44 record and ranks second in team history with a 3.22 ERA (minimum 1,300 innings pitched), fourth in strikeouts (1,381) and seventh in wins and innings pitched (1,308 2/3). Santana is the only Twins pitcher to win multiple Cy Young awards, coming in 2004 and 2006.

Outfielder Michael Cuddyer and general manager Andy MacPhail were named to the club's Hall of Fame last year.
