Former Gophers safety Winfield named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month
It only took three games for Antoine Winfield Jr. to make it known he’ll be a playmaker in the NFL.
The former Minnesota Gophers star safety was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month on Thursday for his efforts in September.
Winfield has started all three games for Tampa Bay and has played all but one defensive snap. He’s registered 23 tackles, three quarterback hits, two sacks, two passes defensed and one forced fumble for the Buccaneers.
There were 19 defensive players drafted ahead of Winfield, who was selected in the second round (45th overall) by the Buccaneers.
Winfield played 30 games for the Gophers from 2016-19 and registered 172 tackles, nine interceptions and four sacks.
