Gophers given 10 seed in NCAA tournament, will face Louisville in first round
For the second time under head coach Richard Pitino, the Minnesota Gophers are going to the big dance.
The Gophers were given a 10 seed in the East region. They’ll play seventh-seeded Louisville on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa.
Louisville (20-13, 10-8) finished third in the ACC this season. Pitino’s father, Rick, served as head coach for the Louisville program from 2002-17.
A potential rematch with second-seeded Michigan State awaits in the second round if the Gophers top Louisville.
Minnesota’s last appearance in the NCAA tournament was in 2017. The Gophers were awarded a five seed and lost 81-72 to Middle Tennessee in the first round. Minnesota’s last win in the tournament was an 83-63 victory over UCLA under head coach Tubby Smith in 2013. The Gophers went on to lose 78-64 to Florida in the round-of-32.
