Minnesota’s top basketball player, Amir Coffey commits to Gophers

Minnesota high school basketball star Amir Coffey committed to the Gophers on Monday.

One of the top high school basketball players in the country has decided to commit to the University of Minnesota next season.

Amir Coffey, a star at Minnetonka’s Hopkins High School, will stay home and play for the Gophers, announcing his choice at a news conference on Monday.

The son of former Gophers and Timberwolves player Richard Coffey, Amir is the state’s top-ranked recruit and one of the top 60 in the country. He had numerous offers, including several from Big Ten schools such as Wisconsin and Michigan State.

The 6-foot-7 guard said he was excited to join coach Richard Pitino and play at the same school his dad did in the late 1980s, according to the Star Tribune.
