Ranking Twins’ nicknames on Players Weekend jerseys
FOX Sports North
Major League Baseball players are trying something different the weekend of Aug. 25-27 -- they will be wearing a nickname (chosen by them) on their jerseys instead of their last name (well, in most cases). MLB's team shop has all of the jerseys available for sale, so we thought we'd go through and rank the nicknames of the Minnesota Twins from best to worst. At least in our opinion.
1. Tyler Duffey: The Doof
This is everything a good baseball nickname should be. It's short. It's fun to say. It makes sense.
2. Byron Buxton: Buck
3. Ervin Santana: Magic
Who doesn't want to be called Magic?
4. Bartolo Colon: Morales
This appears to be a tribute to his mother, Adriana Morales, who died of breast cancer in 2014.
5. Adalberto Mejia: Volador
It's Spanish for "flying."
6. Jose Berrios: Orlandito
Berrios once told MiLB.com that he goes by Orlando in his native Puerto Rico. The suffix "ito" is a common diminutive in Spanish, so "Orlandito" kind of translates to "Little Orlando."
7. Jorge Polanco: Chulo
This can mean a couple things. Cocky, pretty or cute when used as an adjective, or pimp when used as a noun.
8. Miguel Sano: Boqueton
This appears to be a variant of a nickname we've known about for a while: Bocaton, which supposedly means "big mouth" in Spanish.
9. Max Kepler: Rozycki
His full name is Maximilian Kepler-Rozycki.
10. Eddie Rosario: Baudidou
11. Hector Santiago: Bulldoze
Maybe he and Dozier are close?
12. Ehire Adrianza: Guarenero
Adrianza is from the city of Guarenas in Venezuela.
13. Jason Castro: Stro
It's Castro. But shorter. And cooler.
13. Brian Dozier: Doz
We're still working out how Santiago landed "Bulldoze."
14. Eduardo Escobar: El De La Pica
"Pica" can refer to a bunch of things. We're kind of at a loss here.
15. Chris Gimenez: G
I mean, it's something.
16. Kyle Gibson: Gibby
This is the nickname of like 90 percent of the world's Gibsons.
17. Phil Hughes: Peej
His full name is Philip Joseph Hughes.
18. Glen Perkins: Perk
This seems self-explanatory.
19. Buddy Boshers: Buddy
This seems even more self-explanatory.
20. Robbie Grossman: Grossman
21. Joe Mauer: Mauer
I expected more out of Joe, who legend says has a rap studio in his basement.
22. Travis May: May
He goes by "iamtrevormay" when gaming, which seems like a missed opportunity for some cross promotion.
